Meeting Minutes Archive
 | December 6, 2004 Committee Meeting Minutes
prepared December 12, 2004
Action items:
1) If you can make calls to line up volunteers for the
January 22 work day, please contact Thomas Noyes to get
a calling list--itıs not too early to get the word out
and secure commitments!
2) We need small sturdy containers for individual sealer
portions. Plastic yogurt or tofu containers work well,
so please save these and drop them off at the storage
facility.
3) Next meeting, Monday, January 3, 2005
Clearing of driftwood from Pond--was done by County
workers by Nov. 4, 2005.
The installation of two recycled plastic benches donated
by Marge Freeman was completed by Doug Nielsen, Marge
Freeman and Thomas Noyes. These benches are located
adjacent to the Comfort Station and along the walkway
near the Kamalani Pavilion.
A donation will be made to The Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park from the sale of Salt of the Earth seasoning. This support is from Lily Dowling.
Camping Ordinance: This may possibly come before the
County Council in January, depending on legal review
currently in progress by the Administration. Support
before the Council by Friends will be very helpful in
getting a County employee stationed at the South end of
the Park, the camp grounds available for reserved
overnight camping, and a means to reserve the Kamalani
Pavilion.
An ugly tree has heaved the sidewalk near the
Playground. Clayton has submitted a work order to Doug
Haigh to have the tree removed and the sidewalk
repaired.
Denis Kavanaugh raised the concern about the mud puddle
under the Bridge compromising the fence footings. The
low spot under the Bridge has been filled in with beach
sand by the County Roads crew, on or around December 10.
They apparently did not want to introduce another
material such as crushed coral or stone since it is a
Special Management Area.
Completed work days:
11/20/04: at Comfort Station and Bridge, turn out was
about 15 people. Completed reinforcing the fences at the
Bridge & remounting two signs near the Bridge. Also, the
completed was half of first application of grout color
field at the Comfort Station.
12/11/04: ten volunteers completed the first coat
application of the color field on the Comfort Station.
The lettering was repainted on the sign indicating that
people driving on the beach should only go South, and
the bushes around that sign were also trimmed back.
Upcoming Work day dates:
1/22/05: Playground sealing wrap-up & Bridge Sealing
work day: 7:30 AM to noon on Saturday.
Target volunteer count is 60 volunteers. Phone number
sheets were distributed to Committee members to make
calls & obtain commitments. If you can make calls,
please contact Thomas Noyes to get a calling list--itıs
not too early to get the word out and secure
commitments!
We need small sturdy containers for individual sealer
portions. Plastic yogurt or tofu containers work well,
so please save these and drop them off at the storage
facility.
Annaleah Atkinson and Wayne Soma will coordinate food
for lunch. Thomas Noyes will arrange for donated
pastries from Safeway. John Lydgate will arrange for
coffee.
Committee members are urged to get commitments from
organizations that are likely to participate.
April 23, 2005: Brush cutting at the North end of the
Park, mauka of the Heiaus. Also Beach cleaning and
gardening are capability based activities. Participation
from Kauaiıs Great Weigh Out could be as high as 200
individuals, according to Jo Manea.
This project will require a good deal of organization of
the various work crews since weıll be using chain saws
and heavy equipment. Please give some thought to
organizational issues and bring your ideas to the
January Committee meeting.
Tim Bynum has verbally informed Kauai Parks District
Superintendent Wayne Souza of the project--he requested
notification in writing so that he can arrange for State
personnel to be present. Thomas Noyes will notify Mr.
Souza by mail. The donation of a heavy duty chipper &
crew is being sought for the operation--pass leads on to
Thomas Noyes (639-1018) or Doug Nielsen (823-6672).
Committee members are urged to get commitments from
organizations that are likely to participate.
Next meeting, Monday, January 3, 2005, 5:30 PM Aloha
Beach Resort.

Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park Committee Meeting
Minutes
Attended by Pat Arthur, Annaleah Atkinson, Sandi Brewer,
Tim Bynum, Pat Fleck, Marge Freeman, Denis Kavanaugh,
John Lydgate, Bruce Netzer, Doug Nielsen, Thomas Noyes,
and Wayne Soma.
Treasurerıs Report (none available as Leila Fuller was
traveling)
Doug Nielsen reported that the sticker ball weed in the
playground has been eradicated.
Work days:
11/7/04: A few people were asked to work on preparing
the Comfort Station near the Kamalani Pavilion for
completion of the artwork and also weeding the planting
area in front of that Comfort Station on Sunday,
November 7, 2004. A total of fourteen people assisted
with that effort. The walls were sprayed with a TSP
solution, scrubbed, and hosed. Application of the
mermaidıs arms will be completed before the next work
day.
11/20/04: Tim Bynum, Denis Kavanaugh, John Lydgate,
Bruce Netzer, Doug Nielsen, and Thomas Noyes committed
to a mini workday on Saturday, November 20, 2004.
Additional workers will be welcome. Objectives are
installing eight fence posts and remounting two signs on
four new sign posts in the area of the Kamalani Bridge.
Work entailed is digging twelve holes in the sand,
cutting and setting the twelve posts, attaching the
signs and fence sections to the posts, and mixing
concrete with a concrete mixer.
Additionally, Pat Arthur needs a crew of artists to
work on applying grout to create color fields on the
walls of the Comfort Station. Start at 7:30 AM,
refreshments & plate lunches will be served.
1/22/05: There will be a major workday starting at 8:00
AM on Saturday, January 22, 2005. The objectives will be
to seal all the Kamalani Bridge and complete the portion
of the Playground that was not sealed on 9/11/04. We are
targeting 60 people to come & work. Refreshments & lunch
will be served.
4/23/05: Brush cutting at the north end of the Park on
Saturday, April 23, 2005. Objective is to cut and clear
brush and haul it to greenwaste. We are targeting 40
people to come & work.
Other Park maintenance topics:
Clearing driftwood from the ³Ponds² was considered as a
volunteer project to be organized for November 13, but
that became unnecessary when the County cleared the
Ponds and beach on November 4.
John Lydgate will work with the County to plan an
operation to remove sand that has accumulated in the
Ponds. Target date is May, 2005 during low tide
conditions. This will NOT be a volunteer operation.
Pat Fleck will key in contact information for volunteers
who worked on the Kamalani Pavilion.
There is an ugly tree that has heaved the sidewalk near
the Playground. Solution is to remove the tree and
remove and repour a section of the concrete sidewalk. A
date has not yet been set for that work.
Maui lumber sale: per River Sussmanıs e-mail 10/20/04:
³The money that we will be using to pay you is in the
last phases of getting signatures from all the county
offices. I expect to have that money within two weeks.²
No word yet on payment being received.
Discussion of Goals and Objectives for the 2005-6
period. The major goal for 2005 is to restore the
vegetation line along the beach to the south of the
park. Current objectives are: determine the scope of
work, estimate project costs, and write & secure grants
to fund the project. Target date for the work is
October, 2005.
The Final Report to Hawaii Community Foundation for
grant funds spent on the Kamalani Pavilion project in
2004 needs to be written and submitted.
Two recycled plastic benches donated to The Friends of
Kamalani and Lydgate Park by Marge Freeman will be
shipped from Maui on Friday 11/19. The benches will be
placed in the Kamalani Bridge area near the Comfort
Station and along the walkway near the Pavilion.
Tim Bynum gave an update on the Sports Fields progress.
A consultant has been hired by the County to design a
state of the art underground irrigation system for one
of the three fields. Installing similar systems for the
other two fields would cost somewhere on the order of an
additional $300,000.
The Camping Ordinance will be before the County Council
again. An e-mail will be sent giving you notice of that
hearing date so representatives of The Friends of
Kamalani and Lydgate Park can be present to testify and
hopefully neutralize any obstructions to getting that
ordinance enacted.

September 11 2004 workday recap: Doug Nielsen reported
this was our most successful Playground sealing workday
so far--focused and productive. Approximately 40 people
were there. About 25 of those were members of the Church
of Latter Day Saints. Also there has been several days
of follow-up sealing work done at the Bridge by Dr.
Tomas Guestıs Work Readiness crew. All of the Playground
that had been power washed (about 80%) was sealed. The
rest of the playground will be power washed by a paid
vendor and sealed at the next work day--see below.
Eradication of sticker ball weed: Doug Nielsen will
pursue.
New committee member--Rudy Raralio, representing the
Church of the latter Day Saints
Jo Manea, State Health Department, attended to
coordinate FKLP volunteer efforts with the upcoming
Great Weigh Out program. She'll work to bring in
volunteers for the Playground Sealing Workday Jan 15 and
subsequent events.
Trex (6² x 6² sections) from the removal of one of the
ADA campsite platforms has been returned to The Friends
of Kamalani and Lydgate Park.
Maui Tools have been returned; Doug, Rudy and Thomas
checked them in, all were returned/replaced in good
condition.
See Hawaiian Airlinesı Oct/Nov in flight magazine Hana
Hou article on page 109 for a feature on The Friends of
Kamalani and Lydgate Park.
Doug Nielsen pointed out that additional supports need
to be placed along the new fence line below the Bridge
to stabilize the long unsupported sections; he'll use
the Trex 6 x 6s as posts & set them in concrete. Workday
& time TBD.
Discussion for Goals and Objectives for 2005-6:
Volunteer workday Saturday 1/15/05 to complete sealing
of Playground

Aloha!
Thanks to your efforts yesterday during our September 11 Workday at Lydgate
Park, the workday was a resounding success! You accomplished a great
deal: you applied about 45 gallons of sealer, got all the playground that had
been powerwashed sealed, and cleaned and refreshed the concrete sidewalk
paintings!
And we had a generous lunch and snacks thanks to John and Annaleah, and
donations from Aloha Beach Resort, The Friends of Tim Bynum, and Safeway
Supermarket.
Doug Nielsen and the Kauai High School Work Readiness Program crew are planning
to finish the remaining power washing and sealing by the end of this coming week.
Following is the list of volunteers who came to the workday and (a) signed the
Thank You card for the Aloha Beach Resort's support, or (b) I was able to
recall. (list not published)
This amounts to 35 volunteers, five more than our target number, and I think
there were a few more.
Also, I brought home a nice new pair of gloves--are they yours?
Annaleah is missing a pair of salad tongs--do you have them?
The next meeting of The Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park Committee will be
on Monday, October 4, at 5:30 PM, Aloha Beach Resort.
Thanks again for making our workday a great success!
